The YR National Convention in Florida was a great time!
Our official delegation included me, Josh McKoon (national committee man), David Helmick (chair of Muscogee co. yrs), and Michael Tabarrok (General council yrs). We all had a great time and it was good to get to know everyone in a relaxed and extended social environment.
The hotel where we stayed at was connected to the convention center where the convention was being hosted. This made the meetings and luncheons very easy to attend. Not only was the hotel beautiful, but the pools, restaurants, and rooms exceeded expectations. The hotel was located in Hollywood FL ; just 30 minutes from South Beach and situated in between the intercoastal waterway and the beach so every room had a beautiful view!
The Florida Delegation did an excellent job of lining up great social events for entertainment, which made this trip more of a vacation and less of a convention. On Wednesday night the sky was lit up with spectacular fireworks on both sides of the hotel over the beach. Afterwards we went over to Rivals, a sports bar, cross the street and spent the rest of the evening meeting YR’s from across the country. All of the YR’s we met could not have been more inviting, especially Sean from Kansas .
Thursday, we had lunch listening to the entertaining past Maryland Lt. Governor and current chairman of GOPAC Michael Steele. After the luncheon the first board meeting was held.
That evening we enjoyed the YRFEST, later we went for drinks at Rivals then were bused down along with other YR’s to South Beach where we partied the night away. We had a great time hanging out with Kristin and Mike from Louisiana and the crowd from New Jersey made the bus trip a blast.
Friday began with an informative speech from Duncan Hunter on Trade with China .
The rest of the afternoon was spent at the pool, and the beach. Michael even joined in a game of beach volleyball. We met several new friends! Later that evening we met up at a great Cuban restaurant where we spotted a Noah Wiley look-a-like, really a delegate from N.J., but close enough. From there we went to the Glenn Murphy party where the beer was free!
Saturday, was busy, we had a state club chair meeting in the morning. The afternoon luncheon crested by a visit with Fred Thompson who was introduced by Mary Matalin. It was great, people were waving signs, chanting and standing on chairs. Afterwards Fred worked the crowd. It was a really great time. After the luncheon the private session of the board meeting was held.
That evening the awards dinner was held with keynote speaker Mitt Romney, who gave a great speech. FL Governor Charlie Christ was also there and spoke as well.
As I close, I have to say, not only on my behalf, but also on everyone else’s, this was a terrific convention. I would recommend to everyone to come to the next board meeting being held in Houston . You WILL have a great time. This was my first national meeting and it far exceeded all expectations!
Josh McKoon and I will soon be hosting a national page with national updates and a calendar of upcoming events. I also am going to begin to call of you club chairman out there to see what we can do in order to get you and your members more involved on the national level.
